At The Traditional Equitation School (TES), we believe that structured learning leads to confident, capable riders. For many years, we have used a rider grading system to ensure that each student progresses at the right pace, mastering essential skills before moving on to the next level. This system creates an effective and rewarding experience for all riders.
How Rider Grades Are Assigned
Before their first lesson, new riders complete a self-assessment questionnaire to provide insight into their previous riding experience. However, a rider’s official grade is determined during their first lesson at TES, which serves as an assessment ride conducted by an instructor. This ensures that each rider is placed in the appropriate level based on their actual skill set.
Rider grades are not static—instructors regularly review and update grades as riders progress, ensuring they continue to be placed in lessons that align with their developing abilities.
How the TES Rider Grading System Works
Our system is divided into three major groups:
Levels 1-3: Beginner Riders
Riders focus on balance, steering, stopping, and posting the trot.
Lessons emphasize building confidence and learning basic horse care.
Groundwork skills, including leading and grooming, are introduced in tack class.
Levels 4-7: Developing the Canter
Riders begin cantering and refining their trot work.
Trot poles, 20-meter circles, and patterns are introduced.
Emphasis on developing seat, leg, and rein aids for better communication with the horse.
Levels 8-10: Advancing to Jumping or Dressage
Riders at this level may choose to progress to jumping or dressage.
Jumping begins at Level 8 for those pursuing that path.
Riders focusing on dressage will refine precision, collection, and test riding skills.
TES has an IEA Dressage Riding Team, providing competition opportunities for riders dedicated to dressage.
Intermediate jumping classes are for Levels 9-10, where riders develop their two-point position, approach, and landing techniques.
TES’s Commitment to Safety and Excellence
TES is proud to be a USHJA-Accredited Riding School. This accreditation reflects our commitment to high-quality instruction, horse welfare, and rider safety.
Additionally, TES instructors regularly school TES horses to maintain their training and ensure they are safe, responsive, and well-conditioned for lessons.
